Perimeter security and persistent patrol

Fixed cameras cover only what they point at and patrols cover a boundary only in passing. ShadowVu explains how a docked, persistent aircraft closes the gap with scheduled patrol, alarm response and detection by day and night.

A perimeter is defended across time as well as space. Fixed cameras cover the ground they are pointed at and nothing else; foot and vehicle patrols cover every point on the boundary, but only for the seconds they are passing it. The gap between those two approaches is where intrusions occur. ShadowVu addresses that gap with uncrewed aircraft that provide persistent aerial patrol of a fixed site, launched and recovered without a pilot present for every flight, and drawn from the same common platform that runs across the rest of the fleet.

The Quad-Dock is the centre of a persistent patrol posture. It is an autonomous, weatherised dock that enables beyond visual line of sight operation and continuous coverage of a fixed site. A docked aircraft flies a patrol pattern on a schedule, returns to recharge and launches again, so that a boundary is overflown at intervals through the day and night rather than at the moments a patrol happens to reach it. The dock is a trademark of the company and forms part of a coherent system rather than an accessory bolted onto a general-purpose aircraft.

Persistent patrol is only useful if it detects. A thermal gimbal distinguishes a person or vehicle from background at night and in poor visibility, when a perimeter is most exposed and a fixed camera is least effective. An electro-optical camera provides the daylight detail needed to classify what the thermal sensor has found and to record it. Because these payloads share one underslung, MOLLE-compatible mount, a site operates the airframe that suits its boundary and swaps the sensor to match the threat and the conditions rather than buying a different aircraft for day and for night.

Response is where an aircraft earns its place over a fixed installation. When a ground sensor, a fence line or an operator raises an alarm, an aircraft can be over the reported point in the time it takes to fly there, giving a control room a live view before a patrol arrives on foot or by vehicle. RTK native navigation, with centimetre accuracy where a correction is available and 1 to 3 m standard GPS otherwise, means the position an aircraft reports and the position a responder is sent to are the same. The aerial view feeds TAK, ATAK and QGroundControl, so the picture reaches the people directing the response rather than a single screen.

Range and airframe are matched to the site. The QC1 Ranger, a 7 inch airframe with up to 1.8 kg of external payload, suits routine patrol and inspection of a defined perimeter. The QC2 Huey, at 8 to 18 inches and 2 to 9.5 kg external, carries heavier or combined sensor packages where a larger site or a longer dwell requires them. For extended boundaries or wide buffer zones, the FW1 Hawk, a fixed-wing airframe with a 968 mm wingspan and a 1.8 kg internal payload, covers distance efficiently in a single sortie. One architecture underneath all of them keeps training, spares and procedures common.

Availability is a security requirement, not a convenience. A perimeter watched by an aircraft that is grounded for repair is a perimeter no longer watched. ShadowVu airframes assemble in three minutes through the Click-Fit process, are roughly 85 percent manufactured in house, and are repairable in the field with ordinary tools, including after a thirty-foot drop. A security team holds spares on site and returns an aircraft to service quickly, which keeps the patrol posture continuous rather than intermittent.

Provenance matters where the task is security itself. ShadowVu manufactures in the United Kingdom, operates a secure supply chain with a stated pathway to remove China from that chain, and uses materials that are recycled and recyclable. For an operator protecting a site, an aircraft and a data path whose origin is documented and domestic remove a category of risk that a general commercial product carries. The company is not ITAR restricted and follows UK export guidelines, with aircraft supplied for surveillance or life-saving purposes only and an End User Certificate required.

Perimeter security is moving from fixed sensors and periodic patrols towards layered coverage in which aerial patrol fills the gaps the other layers leave. A docked, persistent aircraft that patrols on a schedule, responds to an alarm, detects by day and by night and returns itself to its base is one layer of that design, and because it is built on a common platform it integrates with the rest of a security estate rather than standing apart from it. An operator planning such a posture should begin by mapping the boundary, the existing sensor coverage and the response times required, then size the dock, the airframe and the payload to close the gaps that remain.
